Contemporary House in El Salvador Sets the Bar High Posted: 20 Nov 2015 12:00 AM PST A sloping lot is often a challenge, but sometimes a path to inspiring solutions. Adapted to the sloping terrain underneath, the home known as the Mi3 House was designed by Cincopatasalgato for a young family in El Salvador. The contemporary house is owned by the creative account director of an advertising agency and his wife, the brand manager for a car company. Along with his 8-year-old son from a previous marriage, the family loves to unwind after a busy day. Their home gives each of them a base for their preferred activities. Resting on a concrete ground-floor base, the second floor is dressed in dark siding, while the third floor has a wooden facade. The couple loves to cook, drink and watch sports, and their new home was imagined for entertaining. Exhibit A: The main entrance opens to the bar. The family requested that the bar be the first thing people saw when they entered the home, so the dining room, family room and even the gym were designed to overlook the bar area. All of the spaces have mountain and ocean views. The private master suite on the top floor has a large terrace, a bathroom and a walk-in closet. The second floor includes a guest room and the child’s bedroom, imagined as a place to play and go on imaginary adventures. Balancing Home in Sydney Gets Its Wings Crossed Posted: 19 Nov 2015 02:00 PM PST Luigi Rosselli Architects and Alexandra Donohoe of Decus Interiors completed the design of the Balancing Home in Sydney, Australia. The residence is in a recently established and growing suburb on Sydney's North Shore. “Two wings with traditional gable roofing are crossed; the upper bedroom wing balances over the lower wing and family communal rooms,” the architects say. “The barn-like white timber form of the upper floor is placed over a solid red masonry base, running across the width of the site.” The bedrooms, stretching from east to west, are cantilevered over the smaller living quarters; this creates a covered porch at the house’s front entrance and a covered terrace by the pool in back. “The interiors reflect the presence of traditional detailing with a contemporary sensitivity; for example, in the vaulted cathedral ceilings and polished concrete floors,” the architects say. “Robust timber trusses and delicate steel windows provide a vibrant contrast.” The walnut storage unit in the living room creates a visual opposition to the flooring and white walls.
