Its subtropical desert climate is the reason the region is known as the Valley of the Sun. With over 330 days of sunshine a year — and more than 100 of those days reaching a high of at least 100 degrees F — Phoenix is not for those who prefer shoveling snow to basking in the sun. Located about halfway between Tucson and Flagstaff, Phoenix is about an hour's drive from being able to enjoy all four seasons. As for its economic climate, it's known for the "Five C's": Cotton, Cattle, Citrus, Climate and Copper. The internationally acclaimed Heard Museum features 12 exhibition galleries showcasing American Indian artifacts and often hosts world-renowned Hoop Dancers. The Pueblo Grande Museum resides on an archaeological site left by the Hohokam culture 1,500 years ago and includes a prehistoric archaeological village site that has been painstakingly replicated. Phoenix also boasts children's, music and science museums, and it's in the heart of some of the most easily accessible hiking trails in the state. The metro Phoenix area has an extensive freeway system, so you are never far from a major thoroughfare. The average home price is $175,000, with an average price per square foot of $120. If sports are your thing, the Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury are the city's NBA teams, and the Arizona Diamondbacks are in Major League Baseball. The Arizona Cardinals are the oldest continuously run professional football franchise in the nation, and the local National Hockey League team is the Coyotes. We spent about 35 hours conducting extensive research on Phoenix's apartments, neighborhoods and residential options. We looked at more than 130 apartment complexes in the Phoenix area, categorizing them by location and comparing them with a set list of criteria. Besides basic information such as year constructed, number of units and average rent prices, we factored in community amenities such as outdoor spaces and fitness facilities. We delved into the interior design, looking for things such as hardwood flooring, stainless steel appliances, balconies and other modern features. We also placed strong consideration on Walk Scores and accessibility to their respective neighborhoods, all to make confident decisions to determine the best of the best. From the vast mountain vistas of Deer Valley to quickly developing North Gateway, we explored eight of the most popular Phoenix neighborhoods. Whether you're looking to move to the city or just checking out the hot spots, we hope that our guide to Phoenix apartments helps steer you to your next home. Central CityMany of Phoenix's oldest neighborhoods are in Central City. This area has several historic districts; its tree-lined streets highlight the fine architecture. Neighborhood organizations work to familiarize residents with their neighbors and encourage them to become involved in the area's growth. Central City Village is a government and employment center, with single-family homes selling from the low $200,000s to almost $900,000. Things To DoCentral City, close to downtown Phoenix, boasts many amenities, including coffee shops and restaurants. With several parks, schools and libraries in the vicinity, Central City has a lot going for it, especially for active families. Sports venues such as Talking Stick Resort Arena and Chase Field offer family-friendly events featuring national basketball and baseball teams, respectively. TransportationA transportation hub that includes freeways, a sprawling public-transit system and nearby Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, Central City is considered an urban center. Interstate 10 is close by, but the ever-expanding Valley Metro light rail takes residents to events around town or to neighboring cities. Central City’s Walk Score is just over 60 and the neighborhood has a Bike Score in the high 60s, so walking or biking to some locations may not be possible. Surrounded by mountains, Ahwatukee Foothills is close to I-10 and the East Valley, and bound by the Gila River Indian Reservation to the west and south. Once named among America's "Best Places to Live,” Ahwatukee Foothills has fewer than 89,000 full-time residents of all ages, as well as families and singles. Things To DoAhwatukee Foothills is known for its affluence. It boasts fine shopping and dining options, health-conscious amenities, a movie-theater megaplex and several outdoor recreation centers. The Ahwatukee Foothills Farmers Market, craft fairs, art festivals and other events keep residents and visitors alike busy all year round, but especially during the mild winter months. South Mountain State Park, the largest city-owned park in the country, is the best way to see the area, whether on horseback or while hiking or biking. The preserve is also home to thousands of petroglyphs from the Hohokam prehistoric culture. TransportationClose to the main freeways, Ahwatukee Foothills affords easy access to employment opportunities and recreational activities. Public transportation in this area is not as accessible as some would like, so personal vehicles are the preferred method of travel. However, the area is flat, which means biking locally is common. The Runners UpCamelback East VillageCamelback East Village is also referred to as East Phoenix or the East Side. A major section of the housing was built in the 1950s and '60s; because of this, the neighborhood offers a wide range of options. It has a low crime rate and a high graduation rate. With a population of around 163,000 including many singles and young families, Camelback East Village has an annual median household income around $50,000. The roughly 36-square-mile area is bordered by Paradise Valley and Scottsdale, and sits between Piestewa Peak and Camelback Mountain. Things To DoPapago Park has an 18-hole golf course, and the park's sandstone buttes include the Phoenix Zoo and Desert Botanical Garden. Phoenix Mountains and Dreamy Draw Recreation Areas boast dozens of miles of trails through the Sonoran Desert, with Camelback Mountain a popular place to go hiking and rock climbing. Camelback East Village has three five-star resorts and several golf courses with scenic vistas. Thai, Mexican, Mediterranean and French restaurants populate the area, with burger and steak joints available as well. As for museums and art galleries, you're better off going next door to the affluent city of Scottsdale to fulfill your artsy cravings. TransportationCamelback East Village has a Walk Score of 59, so driving is a necessity. The roads are almost universally laid out in a grid format south of the mountains, though, with numbered streets running north/south and increasing in number as you move east, making it easy to get around. The Runners UpDeer ValleyDeer Valley, in the North Phoenix area, offers stunning mountain views and a low cost of living; the average home price is around $245,000. It has a population of nearly 172,000, and the largest percentage of residents is ages 20-49. Several luxury apartment buildings can be found here. Things To DoThe community was named for the Indian petroglyphs of deer found here; they can be viewed in several places. The Arizona State University Deer Valley Petroglyph Preserve is nestled into a beautiful rocky area of the desert and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Pueblo Grande Museum, a 1,500-year-old Hohokam archaeological site, features hands-on activities for visitors. Deer Valley offers a megaplex movie theater, lots of golf courses and no shortage of places to eat; Mediterranean and Vietnamese restaurants, along with steakhouses and other American fare, abound in the area. Hiking and horseback riding on preserved desert trails is a common outdoor activity. TransportationThe geographical location of Deer Valley makes it vehicle-dependent, but residents have easy access to the Loop 101 and I-17 freeways. For those into plane watching (or who happen to fly small planes), the Deer Valley Airport is available to all but commercial airliners. Most residents are under 40, and a lot of families live here. The cost of living is slightly higher than it is in downtown Phoenix, and the median house value is just over $364,000. Things To DoThere's no real nightlife in Desert View, since it's more of a bedroom community than a hub of cultural events. It is, however, next to Scottsdale, Cave Creek and Carefree, so a plethora of museums, art galleries and eateries are within a short drive. The neighborhood's core is Desert Ridge Marketplace, which fits the urban village model of providing a diverse mix of employment, retail, residential and recreational options. Mayo Clinic Hospital, well known for its standard of care, also is located in Desert View. TransportationDesert View residents are vehicle-dependent, since very few attractions are within walking distance. I-10 is not far away, however. The Runners UpNorth GatewayNorth Gateway, north of Phoenix, is considered an entrance of sorts to an abundance of recreational activities and mountain preserves full of desert trails. This peaceful community has a relatively low crime rate and a population of around 16,000. The majority of residents are families with children under 18. North Gateway has a median house value of almost $280,000. Although it's a small village compared to Phoenix, its location makes it a real gem, especially for outdoorsy types. North Gateway encompasses a large portion of the North Black Canyon Corridor, which is among the city’s leading growth areas. A variety of commercial, office and residential areas are being developed here, and much more growth is planned — though the Skunk Creek and Sonoran Wash will be preserved as part of the natural desert environment. Things To DoSeveral western activities can be found in North Gateway; these include the Ben Avery Shooting Range and the Pioneer Living History Museum, an 1800s town that features historically accurate reproductions of buildings and the occasional staged gunfight. Mediterranean, Asian and Mexican restaurants are interspersed with American fare, making it easy to please everyone's palate. TransportationNorth Gateway is not very walkable, but the freeway system makes it easy to get to wherever you're going within or beyond the metro area. The Runners UpEncantoEncanto (Spanish for “enchanted”) is in central Phoenix. Its stable housing market and low cost of living help make this village one of the area’s densest as far as population goes. Residents number just over 54,000, with approximately half being families. The median house value is relatively affordable at around $180,000. At only about 8 square miles, Encanto doesn't have a lot of room for large arenas or other developed spaces. However, two very large parks offer a multitude of recreational activities. Things To DoEncanto Park has made Forbes' list of America’s Best City Parks. The 222-acre park is just a few blocks from the busy central urban corridor. It's an oasis that includes picnic areas, a lagoon, a swimming pool, an amusement park, a nature trail, urban fishing and two golf courses, as well as a softball diamond and basketball and tennis courts. Steele Indian School Park features many of the design elements that reflect Native American concepts of life, earth and the universe throughout the park. The Arizona State Fairgrounds are also located in Encanto; the annual fair often draws more than a million people each year. For nightlife, you'll need to venture out of the neighborhood. Scottsdale is only a few minutes away, as is downtown Phoenix, offering music and sporting venues galore. TransportationA Walk Score of 60 and Bike Score of 62 mean you will be able to get to some places in Encanto by walking or bicycling, but you'll need some kind of motorized transportation to get to areas farther out. The Runners UpParadise ValleyTucked between Scottsdale and Phoenix, this community is aptly named. Because it is centrally located and has top-ranked schools, Paradise Valley is considered one of the most desirable areas in the Phoenix metro area. It has a median household income of almost $132,000, and more than a third of the residents have graduate or professional degrees. Considered by many to be a jewel in the Sonoran Desert, this small residential community has thousands of upscale homes at an average sales price of about $1.3 million. Paradise Valley has a low crime rate, as well as the highest median income in the Phoenix metro area. Things To DoParadise Valley is surrounded by the Phoenix Mountain Preserve, McDowell Mountains and iconic Camelback Mountain, each of which features numerous biking and hiking trails. The area offers several world-class resorts and three golf courses. The neighborhood also has an extensive variety of community facilities, including 16 parks, eight theaters and two libraries, as well as swimming pools, bowling alleys, roller-skating rinks, tennis courts and sports fields. Nightlife is limited to bars and lounges. TransportationParadise Valley's Walk Score of 44 means you can get to several places on foot, and the Bike Score of 66 means that most errands require a vehicle unless you are close to your destination. The G9 Apartment in Kiev, Ukraine, is part of Baraban+ Design Studio‘s portfolio. The 2,852-square-foot apartment’s rounded lines shape not only the living room and hallway walls, but also the ceiling lighting, the furnishings and the eye-catching fireplace in the middle of the room. The sculptural element is not only a bioethanol fireplace; it also serves as a wine cellar and hides the cement support column. This extends the openness of the space, making it flexible and multipurpose. A curved sofa accompanies the Eames Lounge Chair next to the fireplace.
The residents enjoy views of the Dnieper River, Europe’s fourth-longest river. The panoramic views — not to mention the masculine bedroom — make morning here inspiring. Beyond its design, this Kiev apartment has high-tech functions managed via smartphone. Durable materials, sustainable features and an unpretentious look were the main requests of the clients. A high level of privacy is ensured from the street side, while the opposite facade opens up to the decks and courtyards. Two angophora trees and some cabbage palms were retained on the property, providing shade and positive vibes. Sustainable features of the vacation home include heavy insulation for walls and ceilings, rainwater harvesting, birch plywood linings and joinery, and heat-pump water-heating technology. Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the retreat in natural lighting throughout the day, minimizing the need for artificial sources.
