Creative Built-In Storage Maximizes Small Apartment Posted: 10 Dec 2015 02:00 PM PST This apartment, located in a new complex in Taipei, Taiwan, was designed by Archlin Studio for a couple and their 3-year-old daughter. The owners’ request was to keep most of the existing fittings, including the bathrooms, kitchen, ceiling and floor finishes, and to create a modern living space with maximum concealed storage capacity. The design studio built a series of full-height storage/display units along the wall from the entryway to the dining area and into the open living space. A mirrored door panel was installed near the corner of the built-in storage unit to visually break up the heaviness of the element. “Through the use of natural materials, like timber veneer, stone and glass, we created a laid-back apartment that is ideal for this young family of three,” the designers said. In the open living/dining space, white polyurethane paint was employed as the base color, while two different wood tones are used to define zones. Traditionally in the Taiwanese culture, the kitchen is tucked away from the main living space. “Our challenge was to open up the kitchen when it is not in use so it can be joined with the public area as one large open space,” the designers said. Sustainable Contemporary Home Supplies Itself With Energy Posted: 10 Dec 2015 10:00 AM PST Alain Carle Architect completed the design and development of La Héronnière, a sustainable contemporary home in Wentworth, Ontario, Canada. The project is cleverly adapted to a steep slope, and living spaces are located partially below ground. All family bedrooms are located on the second level, with large windows framing the views. “The owners of the house, a young family with two children, requested a home that supplies itself with energy,” the architect said. “Environmental requirements were non-negotiable: no magnetic field in the inhabited space, no wireless communication protocol, energy self-sufficiency, materials free of volatile organic compounds, recovery of project residues, electric car and so on.” Linking family activities with the concept of healthy living was creatively achieved. “Meal preparation became one of the rare ‘at home’ activities, bringing movement and sociability,” he said. “To the development of the eating space at the heart of the project, we adjoined a small greenhouse, in continuity with the big bay window on the southwest side.” Recycled materials (wood doors of a former garage, a removable fence) were employed extensively throughout the sustainable contemporary home. An array of photovoltaic panels ensures excess energy in summer, which can be used during colder months. Despite this ecological approach, the design scheme makes no compromise in style and functionality.
