Master Painters Inspire Ministry Office Design in Netherlands Posted: 24 Dec 2015 12:00 PM PST For the renovation and connection of two government ministry offices in The Hague, The Netherlands, architecture studio HofmanDujardin found inspiration in the rich color palettes used by Dutch painters Mondrian, Van Gogh, Rembrandt and others. The 20-story Castalia building houses the ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport; the three-tower, 15-story Helicon building accommodates the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment. A new atrium connects the buildings. New stairs and bridges provide access to the lower five floors, where the more public functions of the ministries are positioned. These floors include meeting areas, work zones, restaurants and a learning and development center. During the design process, HofmanDujardin noticed surprising resemblances between Castalia’s existing interior and famous Dutch art and architecture. The project developers followed this concept to bring color and personality into the interior design. Paintings with a health and leisure theme were selected for the Castalia building, and those with a work theme were used for the Helicon building. Each painting was enlarged to the size of the floor plans and divided into a grid of 20-inch-square carpet tiles. To match the richness of color found in the original masterpieces, 70 additional colors were developed in collaboration with the carpet supplier. The result is 30 colorful patterns that give each space a distinct feeling.
