Amsterdam Sugar Refinery Gets a Sweet Modern Makeover

Bloemgracht Loft modern bachelor pad by Amsterdam Architects of Standard Studio

The Bloemgracht Loft was designed by Amsterdam-based Standard Studio as a place to relax and unwind. The once-industrial space, a former sugar refinery, was transformed into a sleek and modern home on a charming Amsterdam canal to suit a young stockbroker’s living preferences.

The architects, Wouter Slot and Jurjen van Hulzen, imagined a home fit for city life. They turned the tiny plasterboard-covered rooms in the building, which dates to 1752, into a contemporary 1,614-square-foot loft with an open floor plan.

Overlooking the Bloemgracht (meaning "flower canal"), the front of the house includes the living room. On a split level, the bar and dining area were designed to connect to the rest of the loft. A spacious kitchen area with marble countertops and high-end appliances allows for effortless entertaining.

The architects preserved several original elements, including the wooden beams. Contrasting features create a warm eclecticism: Concrete, oiled oak and unfinished, hot-rolled steel were combined with custom furnishings to shape a welcoming interior design.

The kitchen’s back wall hides a walk-in closet and a bathroom with two rainfall showers. Another multi-functional unit shelters the sauna, spa, shower and toilet.

According to the architects, "The remaining space is the bedroom, office and bathing area with freestanding bath. A multi-functional ‘big black book’ holds the library, the bed and art.” This bespoke piece can be closed off thanks to its hidden sliding doors. [Photographs courtesy of Standard Studio]
