Mid-Century Modern Remodel in California Opens to the Outdoors Posted: 19 Dec 2015 06:00 AM PST Located in Lafayette, Calif., this residence by Klopf Architecture is an update of a 3,363-square-foot mid-century modern house. Aside from the framing and the ceiling boards, all of the materials in the residence were replaced, yet the architects managed to maintain visual harmony. “Faced with a remodeled kitchen, a haphazard bedroom and family room addition, and an otherwise disjointed and generally run-down mid-century modern house, the owners asked Klopf Architecture and Envision Landscape Studio to reimagine this house and property as a flowing, sophisticated, warm, modern indoor-outdoor living space for a family of five,” the project developers said. Blurring the boundaries between the indoors and outdoors was the primary target of the redesign process. The end result is a smooth transition from the kitchen to the dining room and out onto the deck. “Klopf opened up the bedroom with a large sliding panel, and turned what was once a large walk-in closet into an office area with a large sliding panel,” the architects said. “The master bathroom has high windows all along one wall to bring in light, and a large wet-room area for the shower and tub.” We love the unified look of this California home. Modern Prefab Cabin in Remote Quebec Uses Innovative Wood Panels Posted: 18 Dec 2015 12:00 PM PST When a family's cabin on a remote lake in Ladysmith, Quebec, was too dilapidated to be renovated, they enlisted Kariouk Associates to help them create a new waterfront retreat. Sitting on the footprint of the original building, the new cabin was prefabricated off-site and transported to the location for a quick assembly. This greatly lessened the cost, as well as the stress of long-term construction on the property. To further cut on-site labor costs, the architects chose to construct the cabin entirely of cross-laminated timber (CLT). Made from cross-wise glue-laminated black spruce boards, CLT is a durable material that can be fabricated in panels up to 60 by 10 feet. With the exception of the bathroom, which has whitewashed wood and a tile shower, nearly every interior surface of the prefab cabin is untreated CLT. Commenting on the aesthetic of this practical material, the architects said: "While the technology to mill the CLT panels is modern, the cottage is in fact identical in construction and materiality to a traditional log home, where fully milled elements are simply joined together." Another aesthetic aspect of the property is the exposed electrical system, which adds an industrial element to the cabin. In the main living area, a large wall of windows embraces the lake views and extends out to a large deck space.
